ITWatch sat down with Webdock founder & CEO Arni Johannesson to talk about our Funen (Denmark) datacenter, why we insist on end-to-end control, and how we’re scaling to serve more European businesses with simple, sovereign, developer-friendly cloud.

If you want the big picture in two minutes, this is it — and the full Danish article is linked below.

Inside the interview

  • Ambition: Webdock is gunning for a top-five EU cloud position by doing the unglamorous thing well: reliable, fairly priced infrastructure with a clean control panel and real support.

  • Built, not rented: Arni explains why we built our own datacenter on West Funen instead of piggy-backing on someone else’s cloud. Control over hardware, network, and costs = predictable performance and fewer surprises.

  • Scaling up: We’re in scale-up mode — investing in infrastructure, sales, and engineering. Headcount has grown fast since 2019, with more hires planned to keep pace with demand.

  • Who we serve: Not hyperscaler use-cases. Our sweet spot is agencies and small businesses that run standard web workloads and want things to “just work,” without enterprise complexity or pricing games.

  • Sovereignty & GDPR: A core theme is trust. EU data residency and GDPR alignment are part of the design, not bolted on. Control lets us help customers stay compliant without hoop-jumping.

  • New revenue stream: Owning the stack opened a second leg to the business: other companies buy compute and bandwidth from us for specific workloads (e.g., VPN providers).

Why all this matters to customers

Control is not a buzzword. It’s the difference between “sorry for the outage, our upstream did X” and “we fixed it.”

  • Reliability: End-to-end control removes weak links.

  • Privacy: EU-based infra and GDPR-first processes reduce risk and paperwork.

  • Value: No platform rent on top of platform rent. More of your spend becomes performance.
